Greening Their Fleet

Lower Merion School District's Bus Fleet Named North America's #3 "Green Fleet," Ranked #1 among School Districts.

At the beginning of October, the winners of the Government Green Fleet Award were announced at Government Fleet Expo Green Fleet Conference. The award is open to all federal, state, and local government fleets throughout the country and is evaluated on a comprehensive set of criteria and categories including fleet composition, fuel and emissions, policy and planning and fleet utilization.  Fuelmaster® is honored to have one of our customers, Lower Merion School District, named as North America’s top school district “Green Fleet” and third best government “Green Fleet” at the fifth annual Government Green Fleet Awards & Expo in Schaumburg, Illinois.

Lower Merion School District has long been a leader in the use of alternative fuels in transportation and has been recognized consistently throughout the years for its efforts. Less than a year ago, the District's bus fleet was named one of the top green fleets in North America by The 100 Best Fleets in North America, an organization that recognizes "best-of-the best fleet operations in North America."

“The District is proud to be a leader in promoting the use of environmentally-friendly products in all aspects of our daily operations,” said Director of Transportation, Gerald Rineer. “For our bus fleet to be selected as third best from a national applicant pool is certainly an honor and demonstrates our community’s exemplary commitment to eco-friendly and sustainable practices.”

In 1995, the District became the first in Pennsylvania to add buses fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) to its fleet. Today, the District boasts the largest fleet of CNG school buses on the East Coast and was recognized four years ago by the U.S. Department of Energy as "Pennsylvania's primary success story for alternative fuels."

Each day during the school year, LMSD buses transport more than 9,000 students to 136 school locations in the Delaware Valley. The District's fleet of 112 vehicles includes 72 buses fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). LMSD is the only District to serve on the Board of the Greater Philadelphia Clean Cities Council and in 2009 became one of the state’s first districts to incorporate a strategic energy plan as part of its overall strategic plan.

Fuelmaster® is proud to have Lower Merion School District as a customer since 1999.
